After two debut albums, local rock band The Grove, are ready to turn in a new direction by releasing their radio-quality sound EP on Friday, which illustrates their emotional experiences over the past year.
The EP, Coming to Terms, was produced by Eric Cronstein of Lemon Sky and is a collection of different songs that revolve around the word “change.” The group went through a lot of change over the past year including the death of lead singer, Adam Forsthoefel’s, father.
“It’s all about how you deal with a lot of change, it’s about accepting change, and moving forward,” said Forsthoefel.
One of the songs, “Bring You Up,” is simply about seeing the light at the other end of the tunnel. (You can download it for free right here)
“If everything was happy all the time, eventually those happy moments wouldn’t be as special or important. You need sad moments to access the happy moments,” said Forsthoefel.
“Anna-Lee,” a song off of their last album, Psuedothump, was rerecorded for the EP and is one of those timeless songs that Forsthoefel can still relate to even though he wrote it 6 years ago- on his twentieth birthday. The band “never thought the original recording did it justice,” said Forsthoefel.
The Grove really wanted to emphasize on creating great quality music with just four songs instead of putting their time and money on a full-length album.
“Our last album was a live album and I thought it was great. I was very happy with it, but I think this one is a new step forward when it came to the songwriting, the lyrics, I mean everything about it,” said Forsthoefel. “The amount of care we actually put in to these 4 songs, everything about it went forward for us.”
With just days away from the EP launch and not even a week since the death of Forsthoefel’s father, the band is ready now more than ever to perform on Friday night.
“A lot of people thought that we were going to cancel it, but one of the last things he said was that he was going to be there. So, he will be there,” said Forsthoefel. “We decided that we were going to do it and I think that there is going to be a good crowd and a lot of support for us, which is really nice.”
The show at Northside Tavern will include performances from The Grove, 90 Proof Twang, and Counterfeit Money Machine. There will also be a light show, live video recording, a chance to buy the EP, and other merchandise. The show is free of charge.
