Give us some backstory on Panama Wedding...
I had been releasing music under my name for some time while living in NYC. Panama Wedding is actually the name of a song I wrote. There came a point last spring when I wanted to release music under a moniker that reflected the type of music I was making. 'Panama Wedding' was the first name that sprang naturally to mind.
Tell us about your writing process...
I don't really have a particular process per se. I don't think songwriting really lends itself to a regimented 'process' - at least if you want interesting results. But the key, I think, is to write all the time. I sit down at my piano for at least an hour (usually 2 or 3) every day and play around with different ideas. If I think something is interesting, I'll run a simulation of sorts in Ableton to see if the idea can be arranged well. I literally have hundreds of intro, verse, chorus, and bridge ideas floating around. Then I'll look at all the bits like a giant puzzle and see what pieces fit together well. I rarely write a song from start to finish in one go.
To Kirk, Have you been able to quit your day job? If so, how did that feel to be able to do what you love full time?
Yes. The day I was able to leave my day job and focus on music full-time was the single greatest day of my life.
What can Bunbury Music Festival expect to witness at your live show?
A lot of energy. Great music. Several songs not on the EP.
What other bands playing Bunbury are you excited to see?
I am excited to see our friends Royal Teeth perform. We played a show with them at CMJ. They're awesome.
What is next for Panama Wedding?
We're playing a few shows here & there over the summer, but our focus is on finishing the full-length LP!
