The Technicolors Bring Classy Rock-N-Roll to MPMF

The Technicolors are kind of a big deal. The Technicolors are a sophisticated rock band hailing from Phoenix Arizona. They blend grand gestures of rock-n-roll with elements of classic acoustic Brit rock. Their debut album, Listener (released in June of 2012) was produced by lead singer, Brennan Smiley. The album was recorded over a span of ten days! The band has been touring like crazy since the release and are making a stop at our very own MidPoint Music Festival.

I caught up with the handsome front man Brennan Smiley before heading out to play a few shows with The Psychedelic Furs!

CincyMusic.com: What is a day in the life of touring like for The Technicolors?
Brennan Smiley:
Normally we drive to the city we're playing, and use that time to rest, prep, and throw things at Nico while he's trying to sleep. We'll usually go straight to the venue for load in and sound check. Once that's done, we've usually got a few hours before we're on, so normally we'll go grab a bite, or just go walk around & see the city. I try to explore and get myself into trouble as much as I can. After the gig we'll crash at the hotel, rinse & repeat.

CM: I read you like "big songs", what are some of your favorites? How do you portray that in your own music?
BS:
A few of my favorite big tunes at the moment are:
Us & Them - Pink Floyd
Learning to Fly- Petty
New York City Cops - The strokes
And so many more. I like trying to work with the dynamics of a tune when writing. Not even necessarily volume dynamics, but lyrical, melodic, & musical dynamics. That in combination with taste or simplicity, is a fun one to mess around with. I love a big chorus.

CM: What can one expect from a live show?
BS: You can expect to hear our record with a little hot sauce added. Our songs are always morphing and changing little bits at a time, so you'll get to experience that first hand. Its also very loud.

CM: What is next for The Technicolors?

BS: We're on tour for the month, and we'll be recording some new music in October, hopefully to put out sometime soon. We're back out on the road in November, where we'll be touring the west coast with the Crash Kings.
