"This song marks a significant diversion from my usual work," says the singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.
"It's been a rough year for the transgender community. As a woman of trans experience, I've struggled with a whole bunch of complicated, often angry emotions: so I threw them into a song. It's angry, it's vulgar, and it paints a picture of what kind of a person I could be, were I to succumb to darker feelings."
"Canopy" is a raw, angry, and aggressive song, featuring whispered vocals over a pulsing 808, minimal production, and a nasty synth line. The lyrics dissect the cycle of violence, with spiteful references to public figures who promote hateful ideas toward the transgender community.
"Art is art," says Kelly. "It's not always beautiful, happy, or sad. Sometimes, it's pissed off."
