Dead Low Brewing is partnering with the Cincy Blues Society and the Big Joe Duskin Music Education Foundation to host Philip Paul’s 95th birthday party this Saturday, August 8, 2020, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

Philip Paul is playing strong at 95 and Cincinnati needs to celebrate.

The Max Gise Trio will delight guest with some dynamite jazz throughout the party at the brewery. Guests can sign a giant birthday card for Mr. Paul and enjoy a slice of birthday cake (until it runs out).

Philip Paul began playing drums at the age of nine and played in NY’s Harlem nightclubs as a teen. In 1951, Tiny Bradshaw invited

“If someone were to try to isolate the single heartbeat of the early days of rock & roll, that heartbeat is Philip,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum president Terry Stewart.

Paul created the beat for "The Twist" and was on the original recording by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. After a lifetime playing everything from calypso to jazz to rock and roll, Philip Paul was honored at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in Cleveland in 2009. Part of the museum’s Songwriters to Soundmen series, the evening focused on Phil’s career at King Records, on the road, and in Cincinnati nightclubs.

Philip Paul was featured in King Records: Cincinnati Legacy, a five-part series hosted by Lee Hay. It was produced to honor the label’s impact on music in Cincinnati and beyond.

The birthday party is open to the public, but social distancing practices will be maintained, including the wearing of masks unless seated, and remaining seated at the tables spaced 6-feet apart. We’ll all have to dance in our seats and wish Phil happy birthday from a bit of a distance.
