Make some plans for Friday, January 24th at The Southgate House Revival. Queen City Silver Stars, Chromatic Crew, and Jamwave will be performing originals and covers ranging from funk, rock, reggae to soca. There will be additional displays and demonstrations of steel drums to explore, with local artists showcasing their work and spontaneously creating artwork during the performance.
When asked to describe an "Island Sound," most people would agree that the steel drum, is the definitive sound of Caribbean music. Developed in Trinidad by poor street kids, gangs and dreamers, the steel drum, or pan by those in the know, quickly spread across the Carribean and around the world to be used in many different musical styles. For 15 years, many community and educational organizations have started steel drum bands that exemplify the depth and flexibility of this instrument. In Cincinnati, groups like the Queen City Silver Stars, Chromatic Crew, and Jamwave each center their sound around the pan while exploring other genres like funk, pop and rock music. On Friday, January 24th, they invite you to The Southgate House Revival to “hear the pan from different bands.”
