New Lawns started in January of 2016, on the drive home from The Mitchells’ performance with concert:nova chamber orchestra at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NYC.
“After focusing 2015 on that collaboration project, we started to hit our stride as a writing team and decided to take a year off of playing live shows to write a new album,” says singer and guitarist Joseph Willem Mitchell.
“Three years later, here we are. Written in 2016, recorded in 2017, mixed and mastered in 2018.”
New Lawns was a giant collaboration project. Beyond the songwriting, an impressive cadre of talented musicians were a part of creating it: Julie Spangler (CSO) composed the brilliant string arrangements, recorded by Ted Nelson (cello) and Eric Roland Bates (violin) between CSO and concert:nova performances. Josh Seurkamp perfected and performed drums and percussion. Ric Hordinski (Over the Rhine, Monk) produced, composed, performed on, recorded and mixed the album at his Monastery recording studio. Dave Davis mastered the album.
The Mitchells are playing the entire album for the first time with Ric, Ted and Eric at the 12/1 CD release at The Monastery. In stereo, in the round.
