TORRES knows the darkness. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter otherwise known as Mackenzie Scott waits until anything—an idea, an emotion, a memory—gnaws at her, tearing at her fingers and throat until she releases it in song. Her husky voice strains against its human biological constraints like a wild-eyed horse, whispering desperately “Don’t give up on me just yet” on one end and yowling about jealousy with unnerving intensity on the other. Following her self-titled debut in 2013, TORRES pushes herself to even noisier extremes on Sprinter, a punishing self-examination of epic spiritual and musical proportions.
TORRES' sophomore album, Sprinter, is filled w/ fiercely confident, personal songwriting from 24 year old, Georgia-bred, Brooklyn-based Mackenzie Scott. Suffused with a keen awareness of Scott's place in her family and in the world, it's at times frail and quiet, and at other times rich, powerful, emotional and vicious. Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey) produced, and the studio band included Adrian Utley from Portishead on guitar (also recorded in his studio), and Ian Olliver (PJ Harvey's bassist) on bass. After being featured as one of TIME's "2015 Band to Watch,” the debut single of TORRES’ Sprinter was included in best songs of the week lists on Vulture, Stereogum and Consequence of Sound; Billboard, Pitchfork & Rolling Stone ran single reviews. She was one of the most talked about up & coming artists of this year's SXSW, receiving attention from The New York Times, NPR Music, Newsweek, Rolling Stone & more.
Don’t miss TORRES at The Taft Theatre on Wednesday, September 30th!
