Sphynx is a Synth-Heavy Dance Music w/ Funk and Glam Rock band. These Austin, TX natives have been compared to pop icons like Prince and David Bowie and to newer groups like Phoenix and MGMT for good reason. The trio's vibrant live show has carved it's own niche in Austin, where they've sold out popular venues, charted on pop/alternative stations, and become a fixture of the music scene. This was demonstrated on February 13, 2014 when the band performed at City Hall and Mayor Lee Leffingwell proclaimed the day 'Sphynx Day' in Austin.
To date, Sphynx has released two EPs and toured the US coast to coast. With a sound that has proven wildly fun and popular, it’s no surprise that Sphynx is already a veteran of top tier festivals like Austin City Limits, SXSW, CMJ, Bunbury, MidPoint and 35 Denton. In March, Sphynx released the first in a series of live recordings and videos filmed during the last year of touring. They're currently putting the finishing touches on their debut album, Golden Garden.
We sat down with the band prior to the show at Woodward Theater on Friday April 24th with Multimagic!
Give us some background on Sphynx…
We grew up together in Austin forming band after band and began gigging in the Red River District when we were 16. Sphynx began in 2009 as dance pop project. After recording our first EP we toured a lot and developed the vision by playing dive bars every night. Performing the music live helped us realize that we were a rock band at heart and today Sphynx is sort of a fusion of dance, glam, and psychedelic pop.
You are known for your high energy live show, what can we expect in Cincinnati?
You can expect another high energy show with some new moves and sounds. We've done a bunch of writing this year on the road and will be playing a lot of songs from our upcoming album. We've also upped our cover repertoire over the year, which consists of rearranged and tripped out one hit wonders, we'll see which ones surface at The Woodward but they're guaranteed to satisfy guilty pleasures.
What have some of Sphynx’s highlights from the past year?
We played Austin City Limits Festival this year which was a big moment for us after years of going to the fest as teenagers and fantasizing about being on stage. After the festival we left for a month long tour with one of our favorite bands, Stepdad, and spent a week playing in New York for CMJ Festival. Most recently we opened for Jungle in Austin and played Fiestas Festival in Albuquerque with Slow Magic and Del The Funky Homosapien. It's been really cool getting to do some shows with artists we're fans of.
What is next for Sphynx?
We've written a lot on and between tours this year and will be spending the summer in Austin recording our first full-length album. We've got about 20 songs we're chipping away at to turn into an album. We also recorded a lot of our shows this year on tour and Cory has been mixing and editing songs for a live EP that we'll be releasing in about a month. On top of that, we've got 2 music videos and 3 live videos in the works and will begin a steady stream of releases later this summer.
