Get to Know CincyMusic.com Download of the Week Artist: JSPH

JSPH aka Joseph Nevels really does have it all right about now. Nevels has recently signed an administrative deal with Heyday Media Group, a music publishing and administration company based in Los Angeles, California. Nevels also has performed along side, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Talib Kweli and MTV’s New Artist to Watch Timeflies. The lawyer turned singer has performed at various venues around the country from Bogart’s in Cincinnati to Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar in New York City.

Nevels earned his Juris Doctorate at Northern Kentucky University Chase College of Law, where he focused on entertainment and contract law. He was a former football standout in Northern Kentucky. As a redshirt freshman at the University of Kentucky, Nevels was injured and forced to stop playing due to concussions. He transferred to Florida International University in Miami and eventually made his way back to his roots for law school. Some may call that a blessing in disguise.

Give us some background on JSPH…
I’m an artist from the Cincinnati area. Actually grew up in Northern Kentucky. I just completed law school and am recording my first projects.

Congrats on your recent signing with Heyday Media Group as well as your law degree! How important was it to you to finish your law degree?
Thank you! It was really important to me because it gives me a pretty good foundation to be able to understand not only the artistic side of what I do but the business side as well. Having a good understanding of contracts, copyrights and other issues have helped me navigate within the industry with a sense of direction. I also want to own an entertainment company in the future.

Tell us about the EP trilogy in which Rest is the first…
I’ll be releasing three projects about two months apart. Rest, Rule and Abide.  Each EP will have 6 or 7 tracks and each have their own unique feel.

The name came from a part of a benediction my dad use to read at the end of services when I was a kid.  As far as the meaning the first day of the week (Sunday )is the day of “Rest” . I believe you should "Rest" first and then "work from rest" because that will reflect your best work. Next is “Rule” which is doing the work at your fullest potential. Followed by “Abide” which is maintaining and upholding that level of consistency over time.

What is next for JSPH?
After releasing the 3 projects and dropping a few videos I will focus more on touring and live shows. I’ve also landed a song placement in a movie that will release in 2015. Other than that I just want to continue trying to work toward my art and make good for everyone to enjoy. You guys can stay in touch with everything we have going on at www.josephnevels.com
