The 2014 Honda Civic Tour is taking a new turn in its 13th year – with not just one, but three successive tours and three distinct genres of music, as well as becoming a significant pillar of the new Honda Stage Music platform.
Each year the headlining act customizes a Honda Civic which is eventually won in a national sweepstakes by an extremely lucky fan. Audiences are sure to be awed as headliners Grouplove and Portugal. The Man collaborate on an original design. Additionally, American Authors and 3BallMTY will each showcase their creative Civic designs later this year.
Not only will Grouplove and Portugal. The Man be on deck at The Shoe, but support for the show is Typhoon. IMO, all are heavy hitters.
Grouplove has been on fire since they released their 2011 debut full length, Never Trust a Happy Song. Cincinnati first met the band at Bunbury Music Festival in 2012. People are still talking about that show. Grouplove released their follow up album, Spreading Rumors in the fall of 2013. They opened their headlining tour right here in Cincinnati. (Check out our interview with Hannah of Grouplove prior to that show!)
Portland, OR, via Wasilla, AK, -based band Portugal. The Man released their most recent album, Evil Friends, produced by Danger Mouse, last year. With a reputation as one of the most exciting and sought-after live bands on the festival circuit today, the band has headlined shows around the world and played every major notable festival including Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza, and many more. Most recently, the band partnered with the Smithsonian Institute to raise awareness of the SumatranTiger, an endangered species, by distributing a previously unreleased song titled “SumatranTiger” to 400 influencers on 400 custom polycarbonate records which degraded after a certain amount of plays. With no other copies in existence, the 400 participants were tasked with digitizing and “breeding” the song through their social channels with the hashtag #EndangeredSong.
Typhoon is a band I have never seen live. However, they have been on repeat since I discovered them. The band consists of eleven...maybe twelve members now. Complicated arrangements, careful orchestration and meaningful lyrics will have you also pushing the repeat button. The song, “Young Fathers” is a masterpiece, “And I blinked it was over...I was thinking my life would get slower”.
Don't miss this show at The Shoe Friday!
