The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Conductor John Morris Russell announce the Pops’ 2014-15 season, the fourth under the direction of Mr. Russell. The season, presented by PNC along with the Pops Artist Series Sponsor, The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation, welcomes back some of the Orchestra’s favorite guest artists while exploring new artistic genres and collaborations. Highlights of the season include a live concert recording, the return of trumpeter Doc Severinsen, who boasts a long performance, touring and recording history with the Pops, debut performances by Natalie Cole, Indigo Girls and The Midtown Men, a collusion of “Americana” artists and ensembles in a program dubbed “American Originals,” and a semi-staged performance of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man in Concert.
The Pops is also pleased to announce that “American Originals: Live from Music Hall” will be recorded live for later release on the Orchestra’s Fanfare Cincinnati record label. This will be the Pops’ first live concert recording.
“This season takes many of our best Pops traditions to a whole new level,” said Mr. Russell. “We’ve got the big stars, the best performers that call Cincinnati ‘home,’ and the finest Pops Orchestra on the planet with amazing orchestral repertoire that stretches the boundaries of the Pops genre. From popular classics to bluegrass, Motown to Broadway, we’re celebrating American music in a whole new way.”
Two programs feature classical repertoire staged in popular settings. Disney’s Fantasia captures the magic of the timeless music alongside footage from the popular Disney films Fantasia and Fantasia 2000. Cirque Mechanics uses scores from Ravel, Bizet, Copland, Mozart and more to enhance the physical wonders as performed by live acrobats.
The upcoming season also includes the return of Holiday Pops, a program which completely sold out in 2012 and nearly sold out in 2013, which this year features Tony Award-winning Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell.
