After a rocking performance at Midpoint Music Festival, Nick D' and the Believers are back in Cincy!Nick D’ & the Believers emerged onto the Columbus, OH music scene in January of 2013 with a single and video called Find A Little Love. Their “woozy, new soul” was quickly recognized by critics from Stereogum and Paste who called the band “brilliant,” “consistently mesmerizing,” and “one of the fiercest live acts.” They are currently working on their debut album called “We Grew Up Wild," due out early 2014.
We caught up with the band prior to the show at The Drinkery Thursday!
Give us some backstory on Nick D' & the Believers?
NDB got started when Nick had an inspiring conversation with his Uncle about not giving up on his dreams. Nick had been writing songs for nearly 10 years, but hadn't yet taken the leap to pursue songwriting and music. Joseph and Kerry both play in touring bands, and Nick decided to ask them to start a new band with his songwriting at the helm. Joseph's passion and prowess for recording matched Nick's songwriting skill, as did Kerry's passion and prowess for visual design and film work. Creatively, the three gelled quickly, and the ideas for new songs began to pour out. Along with that, the band all three work together on music and lyric videos for each song.
Influences for your sound? Who are some of your favorite artists?
The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, Spoon, Ryan Adams, Wilco, The Black Keys, Dr Dog, Fun, MGMT, Foster the People,
When did you decide to start music full time?
Nick started one year ago, Kerry and Joseph have been off and on full time for 10 years
Background on the name of the band? Why should Nick D have Believers?…
We wanted to conjor up a kind of throwback feel with our name like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Believers had a sort of mo-town, old-timey, Gospel quality to it, and that era of music definitely is a big part of what we do, especially with our harmonies and lead vocal parts. We stand by our work, and we hope the songs and the videos that we create speak for themselves.
What is next for Nick D' & the Believers?
A full length record "We Grew Up Wild," to be released in 2014, touring on the east coast and to SXSW and the west coast in the spring, and getting sponsored by Modelo Especial beer (we wish).
