What inspired the song, "Till I've Done Something I'm Proud of"?
During the time I wrote the song I was listening to a lot of folk music, mostly Dylan and Woody Guthrie. Their stuff is all based on life experiences. When I started trying to write my music like them, I kind of hit a wall because I haven't had experiences like Guthrie or Dylan yet in my life. So instead of trying to invent some fake story about a lost love or fighting in a war, "Till I've Done Something I'm Proud Of" is kind of about the experiences that are yet to come.
Tell us about your songwriting process...
That's always a tough question to answer... There's not really one quick and easy process to explain. I always spend the most time on my lyrics, trying to get them perfect. I labor over every single word. I used to write songs as quickly as I could, just to get them out of my system. But lately I've been trying to slow down and think about what I really want to say. In the words of the late Elliott Smith, "I think it's pretty easy if you just relax and quit thinking about what you think other people want to hear."
What is next for Jake Kolesar?
Well I've definitely got my work cut out for me. I'm trying to get my name out there to venues, and I'm really just trying to gain exposure. I don't have anything too specific in the works, but I've already started writing more songs and gearing up for some gigs in the near future.
