Refusing to be bound within the preconceptions of what post-hardcore should sound like, Greater Cincinnati natives Softspoken have hit their stride with the release of their latest offering, the 5-song EP "Where the Heart Belongs".
Taking inspiration not only from the music and musicians who inspired them individually, but also from their own history as a band, in their new EP, Softspoken demonstrate their ability to seamlessly weave elements of the heavier, nostalgic 'core' sound of 2017's "Pathways" with the contemplative emotion of 2019's "Deaf Perception XE" into a matured, dynamic sound that is all their own.
But what truly makes Where the Heart Belongs stand out is the message behind the lyrics. Touching on issues ranging from being open and honest with a loved one (Sleight of Hand); to the hypocrisy that can be all-too-easily found on the internet in this digital age (Bones), each song has something anyone can relate to.
"Life is really just a big lesson," says vocalist Sam Scheuer. "You might have an amazing day today, and totally screw everything up tomorrow. There's something to be learned from everything you experience. I think you have to just be ok with you who are and where you're at. And I think it's important to pass on what you learn, and share what you feel because there are other people out there facing the same struggles. Embrace the struggle. Keep your mind well. Stay softspoken."
