MPMF Preview: Bob Mould is a Legend in His Own Time

There are bona fide rock and roll legends and then there are artists at the peak of their live prowess. The sets of that Venn diagram usually don’t overlap too much, but nearly 40 years after he formed seminal St. Paul hardcore outfit Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould is very much in both camps. After Hüsker Dü, carved and then recarved the post-hardcore landscape in the 1980’s, he was the driving force behind Sugar, whose Copper Blue is a stone-cold power pop classic, and now has a dozen solo albums under his belt, the most recent of which, Patch the Sky, was released six months ago on Merge Records. Mould continues to be a vital songwriter and artist, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Mould brings his music to vivid life with bassist Jason Narducy of Split Single and Superchunk/Mountain Goats drummer extraordinaire Jon Wurster (who will be pulling double duty at Midpoint with the latter band). Since the release of 2012’s Silver Age, the trio has a penchant for wowing late night television audiences with passionate no-frills performances which rapidly go viral (see, for example, their blistering rendition of “The Descent” below). Their festival performances are no different, mixing in songs from all periods of his career, which means that you still have a chance to throw your fist in the air and lend your voice to “Celebrated Summer.” Midpoint 2016 is bound to be chock full of unforgettable sets, but this is the one you can’t afford to miss.
