Jane Decker is a Local to Watch Out for at MPMF

Cincinnati pop princess Jane Decker started touring at age 16 with Belle Histoire, one of Alternative Press's “100 bands to Watch” for 2012. The success of Belle Histoire’s debut album earned Jane the opportunity to be on the hit TV show The Voice. Since then Decker has gone solo with her amped-up indie-pop sound. Jane Decker is one not to miss at this year’s MidPoint Music Festival. She plays Saturday, September 26th at Christian Moerlien Brewing Co.

We sat down with Jane Decker prior to the show at MidPoint Music Festival!

Your sound has evolved over the past few years. Tell us about the evolution of Jane Decker…
I think most of my sound evolution came from me wanting to do a genre, and quickly getting bored with it. It wasn't that I necessarily mastered the genre, more so that I hit a wall at some point and didn't know how to grow. However, with pop music, my options are pretty endless. Despite me always having a special place in my heart for songs a little more that's funny, because my drummer and I connect on grungy indie music, so we always talk about getting a group together to play random shows under a different name. Indie music is what I automatically write, but pop music is my favorite to record.

What can the MPMF crowd expect to witness this year?
We are actually redoing a lot of my set for midpoint. Since I’m a younger artist, and have to hire out musicians, we've been trying to keep my set pretty simple, with a lot of reliance on my backing tracks. However, I've found that music is a lot more fun to play live, when the majority of it is actually live. I'm going to be playing guitar and synth during my set, as well as eventually implementing live bass in the live performance. My songs are high energy, and in turn, my live set will carry that same pace.

Who are you looking forward to checking out at MPMF this year?
I'm really excited to see Sylvan Esso, as well as JR. JR. I saw JR. JR. at the 20th Century in the fall and was blown away by how much they accomplish during a live performance. There is a lot going on in their set but they pull it off well. Additionally, I'm (obviously) excited about the bill on the Taft show I'm playing. PUBLIC is an amazing live band (that my boyfriend sings for ;) and K. FLAY is such a strong female in the pop community. Excited to see how she is live.

What is next for Jane Decker?
More shows and a new EP that will be released at Midpoint! Very excited for everyone to hear the fresh tunes. Just like every other new artist, I'm just trying to get my name out there. My main focus in addition to gaining exposure, is that I can go against the grain in the industry. There is too much unfortunate behavior in music, and that's not what it should be about. Positivity and authenticity is what I strive for.
