Margot & The Nuclear So And So’s at The Southgate House Revival

Though we wouldn’t necessarily assume it to be otherwise, Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s have fought, and fought hard, to do things their way – after all, this was a “signed” band and we all know they get their way all the time, right? That’s what it’s all about.

It’s at least been an interesting struggle for them, though. What started out as – and, really, has remained – the brainchild of leader and central songwriting figure Richard Edwards, Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s has always shied away from easy definition, instead embracing several musical directions at once. Equal parts 90’s Alt/Rock, Chamber Pop, and Indie Rock, they’re a band that has embraced all of the more clichéd aspects of what it means to be a modern Indie Rock band without ever turning in to one of those clichés. That balancing act alone has earned them the respect of fans around the world, and allows them the freedom to explore sounds and

Fallout with a major label yielded two distinct listening experiences with Animal! and Not Animal, a mishap during the production and creation of a large video related project, and the overall process of writing, recording, and releasing albums on their own have given Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s a broad range of experiences to draw inspiration from. With a dark bent – at times orchestral, at others seething, and yet others subdued and almost precious – Edward’s songwriting is at once oblique and pointed. They’re a band that can exchange subtle instrumentation for outright sludgy-ness over the course of a track and an album, allowing for visible seams to show while sounding seamlessly arranged.

With their new album, Slingshot to Heaven, finally seeing release after a somewhat protracted creation process – one that involved direct fan participation as it was another self-released effort – the band has embarked on a sizable tour, which brings them to The Southgate House Revival this Saturday May 10 [ENTER TO WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS HERE]. Even with their relatively close proximity to Cincinnati – they’re an Indiana band born and raised – their arrival at The Southgate House Revival will be met with excitement by both the fans and the band, as it’s a live experience that can and should be treated as a celebration of where they’ve come from, where they are now, and where they’re going.
