Bunbury Preview: Black Joe Lewis

Black Joe Lewis is the in all in American blues, funk and soul. Joe Lewis was working at a pawn shop in Austin, TX when he first picked up the guitar.  Shortly thereafter, he immersed himself in the local Red River blues/garage scene, recording and performing with Austin luminaries such as the Weary Boys and Walter Daniels. No stranger to music festivals, Black Joe Lewis has performed at music festivals including Bonnaroo, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Bumbershoot, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, Sasquatch! Music Festival, Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival, Musikfest, Latitude Festival, and Splendour in the Grass.

Black Joe Lewis is playing Bunbury Music Festival and we sat down to chat and I just had to ask what happened to those Honeybears!

CincyMusic.com: What can one expect at a live Black Joe Lewis show?
Black Joe Lewis: Expect a band that has a good time and feeds off the crowd. Music snobs prepare to be pissed off.

CM: Tell us a little bit about your writing process. Are you when the mood strikes kinds person or do you have a regimen?
BJL:
I don't have a set writing process. Some times I come with good shit and sometimes its bad or you got nothing. Just come back to it when you feel like you got something to say

CM: You have played a plethora of music festivals, what has been your favorite experience at one?
BJL:
Too many to count, the best was in Spain on the beach and playing in front of a bunch of topless girls. Any show where theres a mosh pit is number 1 though

CM: What is next for Black Joe Lewis? Tour dates, new album?
BJL: New album out on August 7th,  Electric Slave. Then nation wide tour starting  September 7

CM: May I ask what happened to The Honeybears?
BJL:
I would tell you but I don't wanna get sued. We had enemies in our midst

CM: Any advice for a new artist just starting out?
BJL:
Keep it real, if your not unique you wont get noticed no matter how good you are. Play a lot of shows and keep material coming out
