Bunbury Preview: You, You're Awesome

Two men, a rocking beat and a sweet background video. You, You're Awesome is a two-piece electronic band based in Cincinnati, OH. Winner of 3 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards for Best Electronic Act. Kevin Bayer and Yusef Quotah are You, You're Awesome. At a show Yusef rarely talks so most know the names of the songs based on the images that Kevin throws up there during the song. This band knows how to surprise and make every audience member happy. You, You're Awesome are playing Bunbury Music Festival and we sat down with Yusef to talk about possible surprises there and the scene.

How did you get involved in the Cincinnati Music Scene?
I could probably go on forever about how I got involved, but it would probably bore you to tears. Though I think I can trace most of it back to WOXY. If you don’t know what that is…then…I’m sorry. You missed out on greatness. That station and its message boards were what introduced me to what Cincinnati had to offer, and it was through the station that I met Kevin, and sometime later, started this band.
Once we started playing shows, getting involved was just a natural progression. You meet a lot of awesome, creative, talented and driven people, and you just start naturally collaborating with folk. It’s pretty great.

What’s your favorite venue to play? See a show?
Hmmm, tough one really. Motr, The Northside Tavern and the Comet always treat us well. We’ve always had a blast playing Fountain Square, but I tend to not like playing outdoor venues. Hmmm… That might be a stupid thing to say right before playing Bunbury, but it’s just that I think we sound better in enclosed spaces. I also don’t like being so far away from the audience. We’re, you know, a party band, and I feed off the energy of the crowd. I need it to live!

What’s the one thing an out of towner should do, or place they should go, when they visit Cincinnati?
Just one thing? Go get Blueberry Pie Ice Cream from Graeter's. That’s a good place to start.

Any surprises planned for your Bunbury performance?
If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise, now would it?
(Also, we might not have any surprises planned)

What’s one thing our audience can do this week to engage in and help build up the Cincinnati Music Scene?
Why just this week? In general, the best way to help build the scene is to just go out and do shit. Go to a show, start a band, manage a band, volunteer at events, buy a band’s merch, whatever.
Be constructive rather than destructive.
