FolkenPhünk is a bluegrass band that stands the idea of a traditional bluegrass approach on its ear by incorporating funk, folk, rock, and psychedelic influences into its mix. Formed by upright bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Dave Brumberg (The Brummy Brothers) in 2016, his vision is for FolkenPhunk to be a collective of musicians from all over the North-East playing under a single banner. Dave was first joined by guitarist Lowell Nickey and Mandolinist Edwin Lightner (Fennario’s Wolf) in 2017. Together, this core trio has done very well together and has performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic and into the Midwest.
What Folkenphunk does superbly is making acoustic music for people who might not be hardcore bluegrass fans. The band adapts and stylizes its material into an original and interesting hybrid sound. A typical set will combine songs from the Grateful Dead, John Hartford, J.J. Cale, the traditional Bluegrass and Gospel music songbook, and their own original material into a singular experience that leaves fans talking. Currently, the band is touring as a four-piece affair featuring Dave Brumberg on upright bass and lead vocals, Edwin Lightner on mandolin, Chris Blauciak on drums, and Gage Stephens on guitar. All the musicians throw their hats in the ring each night as vocalists, supporting each other with three to four part harmonies and each taking a turn in the spotlight as the lead
