Formed to bring to life the compositions of guitarist Lucas Brode, SPYING present a new, subtle take on jazz-fusion, with a focus on improvisation, and textural variety. Influences include the jazz-experimentalism of guitarists Bill Frisell & Nels Cline, the modern form & rhythmic sensibilities of composers John Zorn & Steve Reich, the energy and feel of rock bands such as Sonic Youth & Yo La Tengo, and the textural moods of artists like Mogwai & Brian Eno. The duo, consisting of Brode and drummer Sammy Wags, put an equal emphasis on the melodic, harmonic, textural, and rhythmic concepts of the consonance-dissonance relationship.
