Reveling in their Appalachian roots, Switchmen boasts the sounds of unapologetic, shotgun-fed Rock ‘n Roll. By way of Kentucky, Nashville, and Cincinnati, the rock trio has a knack for tastefully mixing a slew of influences from edgy rock to raw blues, and even a polished touch of classical undertones.
Forming the band in late 2009, Switchmen released their debut album $2 Pistol in 2010. Critics found the record to be a revival of vintage Zeppelin, Cream era Rock ‘n Roll with a touch of 90's polish. Their energetic delivery has led them to share the stage with the diverse talents of Jesco White, Cage the Elephant, Moon Taxi, The Sick Puppies, Shooter Jennings, and even the inmates of the Kentucky State Penitentiary.
“Switchmen sound like someone’s taken rural American rock music, marinated it in a barrel of Bourbon for twenty years, then released it to the world,” says SupaJam. "They’re what early Kings of Leon only dreamt of being, and must surely have an invitation to Jack White’s studio coming up.”
In 2012, Switchmen released the single “Rambunctious,” garnering national airplay and attention.
“We like this single [Rambunctious] because it is wonderfully nostalgic-sounding and modern-day catchy. Blues. Rock. Sass. Three of the things that go right along with shelter, water and food for us,” says Young Mary’s Record.
In February 2014, Switchmen released their single “Around Town,” setting the stage for their release of "Congress Hotel," which arrived on Nov. 18 to much praise.
“The songs are written to present a story, and the band masterfully vary the tonality and dynamics to help accentuate its plot. This type of songwriting is rare these days, so it’s quite refreshing to hear a local act pumping out such a high quality output,” says No Country for New Nashville.
The trio recently inked a publishing deal with Nashville-based Washington Street Publishing and while you'll only catch them a handful of times live this year, rest assured they are hard at work creating a new record.
