Cruise Down the River to The Forecastle Festival!

Are you interested in helping the environment while viewing art and listening to music?  If so, come aboard the bow and travel down the river to Louisville this weekend with other music, art, and environment activists at Forecastle Festival. Beginning in 2002 as a small community event at Tyler Park, the nautical named three-day festival was created by the Forecastle Foundation founder JK McKnight and structured to equally showcase the combinations of music, arts, and activism.  As of 2010, to accommodate increasing popularity and drawing tens of thousands of fans from all over the world, the anticipated annual summer festival now docksin the heart of downtown Louisville in its beautiful 85-acre Waterfront Park.

Showcasing over 500 bands, including big name touring acts, with diverse musical genres, this maritime port has featured rockhip-hop, bluegrass, and electronicato name a few, and this year is does not shy in comparison.  With bands performing on nautical theme stages – Mast, Boom, Ocean, WFPK Port, and Forecastle Bourbon Lodge, this year’s headliners include The Avett Brothers, Alabama Shakes, and Death Cab For Cutie.  In addition, over 100 local, regional, and national artist have contributed a mixture of installation work, including 2D, 3D, and mixed media; the complete exhibition is designed by a crew of curators through artist submissions.  Over its years, the Forecastle Festival has showcased over 150 environmental non-profits and outdoor recreational organizations, featuring industry partners and prominent speakers, dedicated to the environment, focusing on global hot spots.  The Forecastle Foundation as raised over $150,000 through partnerships, enabling them to find and protect twelve ecologically diverse and endangered areas on the planet.  The event contributes $1 from every ticket to support the foundation and will also have on-site efforts such as reducing carbon emissions and limiting landfill waste through projects in Kentucky, Brazil, and Indonesia.  To encourage sustainable living, Arcadia Power will provide 100 percent pollution-free electricity, Clean Vibes will provide recycling and waste management, and MailChimp will reduce carbon footprints through complimentary bike valet.

While aboard the Forecastle Festival, enjoy the art, music, and environment education all while supporting our environment.  Be sure to also dive in to some of Kentucky’s pastimes, bourbon sampling at the Gonzo Bar and the Kentucky Landing, as well as horse racing at Forecastle Derby.  Board the ship this weekend at the Forecastle Festival in Louisville!
