Restore the Store: A Benefit for Rabbit Hash

On February 13th, the General Store in Rabbit Hash went up in flames. Most us watched the news break on our phones and spent the rest of the evening grief stricken while the news of the destruction unfolded. Kelly Thomas was at The Southgate House Revival that night.  She has performed at the Store and says, “The store is the heart of it all.  There's always something memorable in the response from the folks that live down there. They have all been so good to me and have always made me feel so welcomed.”  An email from Chris Cusentino nudged her to take the bull by the horns and plan a benefit, “Booking it was so easy because everyone loves Rabbit Hash and wants to help. I did try to make the benefit a reflection of the town itself so I asked for a list of bands that have a longstanding relationship with Terrie Markesbery, the store, and the town.”

Restore the Store: A Benefit for Rabbit Hash at The Southgate House Revival will take place this Saturday and Sunday. Grab your tickets HERE.

Rabbit Hash is special to so many people in our community. The store had been in continual operation since 1831, according to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society - a span in which 38 U.S. presidents took office. The Store at 10021 Lower River Road was on the National Register of Historic Places. Not only was it a historical landmark, it served as a much loved performance space for many area musicians, for the past fifteen years.

The event will include performances by over 30 acts, a silent auction and open mic, on Sunday. All proceeds to benefit The Rabbit Hash Historical Society and Terrie Markesbery, the store’s proprietor, for the rebuilding of the General Store.

Kelly Thomas wants this to be an event about coming together, supporting one another through a hard time and celebrating just how great it is to be some small part of a bigger circle of friendship and love.
