Freekbass to Reunite with SHAG at tSGHR

Influenced by everyone from Dr. Dre to David Bowe...even Boosty Collins. Cincinnati’s very own funk musician, Freekbass Sherman is excited to not only reunite with his former bandmates from SHAG, but also play for the second time in Cincinnati after releasing his second album, Everybody’s Feelin’ Real!

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Freekbass knew that he wanted to play the bass guitar since he was in the 6th grade and the Operla Music College played at an assembly at his school.

“I heard that bass and I was like, “‘Whoa!’ The tones that were coming out of it and the sounds that he was creating, it was almost like I was mesmerized”, said Freekbass.

He fell in love with the instrument and began to work very hard at his craft.  As the years went by, Freekbass began to really study the music of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Bootsy Collins (Whom he has worked with in the past).  He has incorporated their styles with a little flare of his own in his music.

Freekbass has released six full length albums including his latest one, Everybody’s Feelin’ Real.  The album was produced by Duane Lundy (My Morning Jacket / Jim James / Ben Sollee) and was recorded just like the some of the Stevie Wonder and Funkadelic albums in order to make the album feel real.

“Just for starting off like that, that’s where we caught the energy.  We were all set up in a circle looking at each other and had the energy of playing a live show as well, said Freekbass.” “So that’s one of the big things right from the get go from the album is that we were there in the studio, if we were there for 8 hours and wrote songs, then so be it.”

Compared to his past albums, Freekbass was more focused on the songwriting aspect when making the album. “This album, I feel it’s the most representative of everything that I’ve done in my catalog of music and so everybody is feeling real, everybody on the album that was doing it was feeling real and everybody involved and hopefully everybody that is listening to it is feeling real,” said Freekbass.  “That’s kind of the whole gist of both that song and the album. It’s about basically being true to yourself.”

Each song on the album gives a distinctive feel, but are not limited to one genre. Freekbass will be performing not only those songs, but also premiering a new song at The Southgate House Revival as well!

You can catch Freekbass at The Southgate House Revival on Saturday, November 29th at 9p Tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door. Doors open at 8p and the show starts at 9p.
