Young the Giant will Break You Down with Happiness

We’ve all heard it: “My Body” by Young the Giant. That youthfully energetic and super catchy anthem of perseverance where frontman Gadhia screams, “My body tells me no, but I won't quit cause I want more, cause I want more.” It’s a song that largely contributed to the success of their 2010 self titled debut album. I remember seeing them perform it on the 2011 MTV video music awards. They invited hundreds of fans from their So Cal hometown to join them on stage. Man, I thought, how cool would it be to be there right now? Those guys sure know how to have a good time! I’ll admit it. I was totally dancing around in my living room. Their energy was so undeniable; I could feel it through my TV. No wonder they’re on the top of my “Must See” list at Bunbury this weekend.

“Cough Syrup” was also a huge contributor to their debut album success.   It’s a poetic ballad calling attention to coping with life when you haven’t quite found your happiness niche yet: “If I could find a way to see this straight, I'd run away to some fortune that I, I should have found by now.” Can’t we all relate to that?

So just who is this relatable and energetic Young the Giant? The ethnically diverse indie rock band consists of Sameer Gadhia (vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar/vocals), Payam Doostzadeh (bass) and Francois Comtois (drums/vocals). YTG has even received rare praise from 80’s New Wave god Morrissey of The Smiths: “I could break down with happiness at the new debut CD by Young the Giant. I will be kneeling with gratitude on a hardwood floor for many years to come. It is the whole thing. It is the perfect tone and Sameer’s voice is unbreakable.”

Now I think “It’s About Time” for us to fast forward a bit. In October 2013, Young the Giant released that song as the lead single from their second album, Mind Over Matter which dropped in January this year. “It’s About Time” has an abundance of rockin’ electro sounds that that enrich powerhouse vocals. The New York Times called Mind Over Matter, "a sharp, electric album that has the cool reserve of the Cure matched with the arena mind-set of, say, Muse." Mind over Matter contains the song “Crystallized” where Gadhia serenades us with “when the beat of my drum meets the beat of your heart.” Let Comtois’ drum meet your heart Sunday at 7p on the Main Stage at Bunbury Music Festival!
