I think this applies to one 'type' of working musician. Sounds like they should have just turned down the gig.

Well sure, that's always an option. But I think the wider point about the club business model is pretty valid. Especially from a long term view, as opposed to the short term one.

Yeah, I see that on a local level. Applying this to touring artists does not work though. Artist guarantees keep going up, but the income generated is staying the same. When you get in to 500+ clubs the artists are walking with the vast majority of the money & not leaving enough to cover the bills. Of course, they could care less because there is always another promoter on the other side of town that is willing to give it a shot. People wonder why clubs are closing their doors? It's pretty simple.

I agree with a lot of this, but I'd be interested in reading a club owners response to this.
