Formally Lethargic hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, playing alternative-punk music with an eccentric but philosophical twist. The band consists of Alex Kah (bass, lead vocals), Luke Sackenheim (guitar, backup vocals), and Tony Maccarone (drums). Formed in 2011, Formally Lethargic has performed at many venues in the greater Cincinnati area, most notably Bogart’s, Thompson House, and Madison Theater. Formally Lethargic has also shared the stage with several national talents, including: A Dying Regime, Violent Affair, The Casualties, Koffin Kats, Reagan Youth, fungonewrong, Downtown Brown, Psychostick, and Joe Buck Yourself! Each member of Formally Lethargic brings diverse musical influences to the table, as Kah has received some classical training, whereas Sackenheim and Maccarone are big fans of metal and hip-hop, respectively. But they share in common a fondness of 1980s- and 1990s-era punk rock; as such, the band’s sound has been compared to that of Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX, The Offspring, and similar acts. The members of Formally Lethargic also share the influence of thrash (e.g., Slayer) and contemporary metal (e.g., Avenged Sevenfold), and they seek to incorporate elements of these genres into their music, as well. Formally Lethargic’s message is simple: Be open-minded, and have a hell of a time doing it. Despite sometimes delving into existential inquiry, the band never strays too far from practical concerns. Above all, Formally Lethargic loves music for its own sake. The members always look forward to live performances, taking any chance they can get to open people’s minds using whimsical tactics such as the destruction of piñatas, crowd-surfing competitions involving pizza, and sarcastic disco dancing. In short, when you put an amateur philosopher, an audiophile, and a speed demon in the same room, you are bound to have some interesting results. Formally Lethargic is currently in the process of finishing a new EP entitled "The Examined Life," which is scheduled to be released on March 20, 2015.
