Faint Signal is a Craigslist hookup that began back in 2011 with a post asking if Prog rock was dead in Cincinnati. Randy Campbell, fresh off of working a ten year stint with regionally successful power pop band Screaming Mimes, and Henri Eisenbaum, 25 years worth of life living out of the music scene, connected after Randy’s posting.
Randy cut his teeth in progressive rock and Henri had almost an album’s worth of music that needed a fresh set of ears. The subject matter deals with social and political issues, awareness, inner reflection and optimism for the future. The Cincinnati music scene is in the midst of busting at the seems with great original music, but FAINT SIGNAL is the only progressive rock band. They see it as a great challenge with the resurgence of Prog Rock with the odd time signatures, thick harmony vocals, strong melodies, great guitar work and lush keyboards. Mostly written by Henri, it’s honestly written with feeling from a life lived and thoughtful opinions of a citizen’s look at the world around him from a country in flux.
With the rise of great progressive bands like Lifesigns, Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, The Flower Kings, Sound of Contact and the continued interest in Marillion, Spock’s Beard, Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited albums, FAINT SIGNAL has a fresh sound, yet a sound that has experience.
Faint Signal’s, self titled debut album was released in 2014, now with the release of their sophomore album “Formula” Faint Signal has expanded their sonic prog palette and taken the journey to the next level. While the core of Faint Signal’s music has always been shared by Henri and Randy’s writing and engineering, several other veteran musicians from the Cincinnati music scene and beyond have collaborated along the way to bring their debut and sophomore albums to fruition.
Randy Campbell: “This has certainly been a welcomed surprise. After 10 years in pop music, it feels great to get back to my roots. With what I see going on in progressive music today, I feel we have something legitimately to offer. Finding a new partner in crime at this stage of the game isn’t easy. You need to be as open as you can and quite frankly Henri has made it very easy. We hit it off right from the get go and we find ourselves in a working groove that we need to continue to nourish while the harvest is abundant.”
Henri Eisenbaum: “After a very long hiatus from performing and playing, I was inspired to begin writing again in early 2010. The truth be known, I never stopped writing in my head, it’s not something you can turn on or off like a switch. When the muse meets a topic of inspiration, you gotta tune it in and listen to what it’s trying to tell you. The crossroad of universal timing that brought Randy and I together was for me one of those times the universe whispers in your ear. We did indeed hit it off right from the start, and with this great resurgence in Prog Rock I’m very much looking forward to expanding the musical journey even further and exploring new sounds and new ways to make music.
